Open Studios Napa Valley
Celebrating Local Visionaries through Video
For several years, the Napa Valley Art Association commissioned me to create a series of videos showcasing the diverse talents of local artists. These videos were featured as part of the highly anticipated Open Studios Napa Valley, a free, self-guided art tour held over two weekends each September. This unique event allows over 75 artists to open their creative spaces to the public, giving visitors the opportunity to meet the artists, watch live demonstrations, and purchase art directly from the source.
In this series, I not only captured the artists at work but also highlighted their individual stories, creative processes, and the inspirations behind their art. Below are a few examples of the videos I created for this event, offering a behind-the-scenes look at the creative processes of Napa Valley’s finest artists.
Key Skills and Process:
Through this project, I showcased my ability to plan, shoot, and edit compelling video content that tells a story and engages the audience. It demonstrates my proficiency in:
Videography: I captured each artist’s process using professional techniques such as proper framing, lighting, and camera movement to visually represent their unique work.
Storytelling and Interviewing: I developed engaging narratives through thoughtful interviews, ensuring that each artist’s voice and creative journey was authentically represented.
Video Editing: Utilizing Premiere Pro, I edited raw footage into polished, professional videos, integrating music, titles, and B-roll to create an immersive and informative experience for viewers.
Content Strategy: I crafted videos with specific objectives in mind, whether to highlight an artist's technique, demonstrate a process, or showcase the finished work, all while ensuring the videos served the needs of the Napa Valley Art Association’s promotion.
Collaboration and Client Relations: Throughout the project, I worked closely with the Napa Valley Art Association and individual artists, building relationships and ensuring that the final videos aligned with the vision of both the artists and the event organizers.
This project reflects my strong abilities in videography, editing, and content creation, all of which are integral skills for a professional multimedia or media production role. My work here demonstrates my capacity to produce content that resonates with audiences, promotes artists’ work, and supports event marketing efforts.
Theresa Lawless, an artist residing in the Napa Valley, blends her lifelong passion for art and nature in her breathtaking floral paintings. With a background in botany, Theresa began her artistic journey by studying drawing while pursuing her degree. Though she took a more practical route in business for many years, art was always a constant pull. Her dedication to her craft led her to continue her art education through various classes and workshops, eventually discovering her artistic voice through large, vibrant flower paintings.
Theresa’s floral works offer a unique “bee’s eye” view, capturing the beauty of her subjects in a way that makes them feel alive. Whether gathered from her garden, hikes, or even flower shops, each painting is born from photographs taken at multiple angles to capture the dramatic play of light and shadow. Working in a photo-realistic style, Theresa brings each petal, each detail, to life—so much so that you can almost feel the texture and catch the sweet scent of the blooms. Through her work, Theresa invites us into a world of vibrant nature, where flowers are not just seen, but experienced.
